artist talk mit JEAN-PHILIPPE CÔTé (Québec)

Jean-Philippe Côté ist ein kanadischer Medienkünstler, der veraltete Technologien in interaktive, poetische Installationen verwandelt. Mit ausrangierter Hardware wie alten Geldautomaten, Gegensprechanlagen oder iPhones (wie bei seiner ausgestellten Arbeit Panégoptique) und eigens entwickelter Software erschafft er neue Narrative für Elektroschrott.

Seine Werke laden zur spielerischen Reflexion über unsere Beziehung zu Technologie und Selbstwahrnehmung ein. Ein zentrales Thema ist dabei die Spiegelung und Verzerrung des Körpers in digitalen Medien, indem beispielsweise mithilfe einer Erkennungssoftware zwei Gesichter miteinander verschmolzen werden und eine neue, nun fremde Gestalt zu sehen ist.

Als aktives Mitglied der Open-Source-Community teilt Côté seine Software frei und ist bekannt für seine Beiträge zu kreativem Programmieren und Physical Computing.

Im artist talk gibt Jean-Philippe Côté Aufschluss über seine Arbeit Panégoptique , die das ganze lab.30 über die Besuchenden im Dachboden mit neuen Gesichtszügen fasziniert.

  • ARTIST TALT WITH JEAN-PHILIPPE CÔTÉ (QUEBEC)

    Jean-Philippe Côté is a Canadian media artist who transforms obsolete technologies into interactive, poetic installations. Using discarded hardware such as old ATMs, intercoms, or iPhones (as seen in his exhibited work Panégoptique) and custom-developed software, he creates new narratives for electronic waste.

    His works invite playful reflection on our relationship with technology and self-perception. A central theme is the mirroring and distortion of the body in digital media—for example, by merging two faces using recognition software to reveal a new, unfamiliar figure.

    As an active member of the open-source community, Côté freely shares his software and is known for his contributions to creative coding and physical computing.

    In his artist talk, Jean-Philippe Côté offers insights into his work Panégoptique, which fascinated lab.30 visitors throughout the festival by giving them new facial features in the attic space.
