MEHR MUSIK und Lechwerke Augsburg: Kühlrippenmessluftschnüffelleuchtstofforgel

Five sound installations and a magic machine

How does a cooling plate sound, can musical tones be played with the help of ventilators, can a complete melody be created by using measurement devices?
Computer components, relays, fluorescent lamps and electronic devices serve as the basis for musical machines and lighting objects. The components – taken from the electronic waste containers at LEW Augsburg - have been investigated in terms of their sound characteristics and then used in opposition to their original function.
By this means the functional world of wires, resistors, transistors and inductors gains a poetical side and then again functions – but in a kind of alienated way. Relays make computer chip radiators sound, the ticking of mechanical time components can be heard via loudspeakers, and an electric meter becomes a magical machine. The audience interacts and influences the patterns of light, as well as the musical tones, sound and rhythmical patterns.
An interactive orchestra consisting of six individual objects is presented, its members all playing with each other and against each other.
The objects have been developed and constructed under the direction of sound artists Erwin Stache (Leipzig) and Sebastian Giussani (Augsburg) with 12 apprentices of the department of electronics of Lechwerke AG (LEW) (training manager: Rainer Trieb).Sebastian Giussani (*1974) has been working in various musical genres. During his studies at the Akademie der Bildenden Künste München he set focus on sound installations und sound performances. He organizes electronic music conferences and has been working as a composer in the field of contemporary electronic music for four years. In 2008 he was awarded with the city of Augsburg`s young artists’ arts award.Erwin Stache (*1960), originally born in Schlema / Aue (former GDR), started to build his first synthesizer in 1976 under the difficult conditions of purchasing materials in the former GDR. According to this situation he created most of his objects out of waste material, cassette recorders, record players and old engines. He studied Music and Mathematics and has been working as a free-lance musician (piano/organ), composer and sound object designer and has won various awards.
