"The Earth Is a Disc"
Satellite sound by G-Pod
The "G-Pod" essentially is a hacked iPod, but instead of just
reproducing mp3-files it plays the earth and so generates sound in real
time. It is able to locate the positions of a choice of public
satellites (about 400).
The circular path of a chosen satellite is projected onto the surface of the earth.
As the needle follows the groves of the record the imaginary trace of
the satellite scratches across the surface of the globe and translates
the topography into sound. In this sense each satellite performs a
"song". The fast ones take two hours, some take weeks and some are
infinite drones (the stationary satellites).
The display offers a minimum visualisation of the process.
The player is presented in a professional equipped "GP-Store" by a salesmen (performer).
On the wall one can see a printed map of the world, that can help to
interpret the data and locate the actual position. The audience is
treated as a customer. A free promo/data-sheet is handed to each
customer.
